Seminar “Biodiversity conservation: Selamatkan Yaki” at UNSRAT

Hello everyone!

We would like to share with you an amazing morning, organised by Dr. Wiske Rotinsulu, from Environmental Studies Center (PPLH-SDA), Sam Ratulangi University Manado (UNSRAT): A seminar themed “Biodiversity Conservation: Selamatkan Yaki”! We were very honoured to be invited as speakers at this event!

At the same day and time, there was another happening, organised by our partners Tangkoko Conservation Education (TCE). So our team split up: Edies and Yunita were attending TCE’s end of year event which was held at Tasikoki and Caroline and I headed towards UNSRAT. We were very lucky to have Jurriaan and Prisi joining us! They were helping us record the event through photography and video. Our audience were 120 university students and 25 lecturers, which required a different talk than the last one Caroline and I did (remember our talk at the elementary school at Manado Tua?).

We did not expect the room to be so full. The students even added extra chairs in the back so they could sit!

We were warmly welcomed by Wiske and her team in a beautiful auditorium. After setting everything up, it was time to be introduced. Professor Ir. Dantje T. Sembel, Director of International Affairs, made an opening speech expressing his thanks for our attendance and the importance of biodiversity conservation. His colleague Professor Doddy Sumajow, the Vice Rector of Planning, Supervision and Collaboration followed, also welcoming our team to the university.

DSC_0138Most of you probably already know our Education and Awareness Raising Strategy (EARS) and how we have taken the first step in implementing this strategy by organising our first Yaki Pride Campaign in 2013 for the areas of Tomohon and Langowan. During this talk, we not only gave an overview of our campaign activities so far and our future plans, but also explained about why we chose these activities. Remember that we did a survey interviewing almost 800 respondents during the months September to October last year? Well, this gave us information about the current state of the communities’ knowledge, attitudes and behaviours towards the hunting, consumption and trading of Macaca nigra (yaki). After this, we organised a conservation workshop and invited all community leaders of our campaign areas. We involved heads cultural, religious and educational institutes as well as heads of the districts (i.e. camats) and heads of the traditional markets. These people are the faces and voices of our campaigns. For example, Ibu Syske Wongkar, head of the district (kecamatan) of West Tomohon, who is featured on one of our campaign billboards. Watch our interview with her below!
DSC_0123Kalian mungkin sudah tahu mengenai Education and Awareness Raising Strategy (EARS)

Based on the recommendations of the community leaders, and based on our survey results, we developed our campaign plan. But that’s not all we revealed! Did you know that there is an international organisation, named RARE, who are training conservationists community-based solutions for global conservation? Together, they have already implemented more than 200 Pride Campaigns in more than 50 different countries around the world! Amazing, right? RARE actually has a wonder formula, which they call the “Theory of Change”, see it here:

RARE's Theory of Change (adapted by SY)

In the figure you see (1) Knowledge (K) – which stands for increasing people’s awareness of nature around them and how their behaviour affects it, (2) Cause a shift in attitudes (A) by talking to people on an emotional level about the personal, cultural and economic benefits of protecting nature, (3) Interpersonal communication (IC) – Get people talking to each other about the conservation issues and (4) identify possible barriers (BR) that are prohibiting behavior change. With focusing on these four aspects and by promoting sustainable alternatives, we can trigger behaviour change which will lead to threat reduction and our desired conservation result: a self-sustaining population of Macaca nigra in the wild, valued and protected by local communities!

Would you like to know more about RARE? We recommend you to visit their website and find information about the many conservationists that have implemented a Pride Campaign to help an endangered species, like the yaki, that is in need of protection!
