It was a typical Saturday in the tropics – the sky was sunny with scattered clouds, the temperature was warm, and there was a fair amount of wind whipping up stomach-churning waves on our way to Bangka! Prisi, Vian, and I were joined by Jose of Suara Pulau, Mary, one of Suara Pulau’s sponsors, Michelle, a reporter, and Sammy, a photographer, on the boat heading for Lihunu. After a 45-minute boat ride we docked on the jetty and headed straight to the elementary school, where the activities were already underway. Marthin, Vina, and their Celebio team, who arrived in Lihunu on Friday, had gathered the elementary school students inside the classrooms and were now busy with the colouring competition. The students seemed very excited; there was the usual chatter of people borrowing colouring pencils and crayons from their friends, but also lively discussions on ideas for colours, drawing in additional scenery, and general talk. Ulfa, the coordinator of Suara Pulau, welcomed us warmly, and we chatted away while we waited for our turn.

IMG_3611In no time at all, the junior high school students returned from their rehearsal for the Independence Day flag-raising ceremony (which was to be held the next morning) and filled the neighbouring classroom. We were ready to rumble! Vian loosened things up with his jokes and small games before I introduced the YYC jingle. It was an instant hit! After several spirited recitals, the students were ready to listen to our presentation. It was somewhat different to our previous school presentations; the small island ecosystem, along with the wildlife inhabiting it, was significantly different to the forest ecosystem that the yaki lives in. Thus, we had to make slight adjustments and accommodate several other wildlife species so it would remain relevant to the students. They were excellent listeners and quickly grasped the points I delivered. The quiz session saw plenty of enthusiastic hands; Prisi, Vian and I had to pay very close attention so we could tell who put up their hand first!

IMG_3624After we finished the presentation for the junior high school students, we switched with Celebio. Celebio had an arts and crafts session with the junior high school students, using recycled materials, while we gave a presentation to the elementary school students. They were really excited about the YYC jingle too! So excited, in fact, that we made it into an extra competition; the student with the most enthusiastic moves got a special prize!
Mereka pun sangat bersemangat ketika belajar yel-yel YYC! Saking bersemangatnya, kami membuat lomba tambahan; siswa dengan gerakan paling bersemangat mendapat hadiah istimewa!

In the evening we put up a screen for movie night. Celebio’s video, “Adung, Sahabatku” about an orangutan in a rehabilitation facility, and our BBC documentary, was an instant hit with the children. They got to see the animals we talked to them about in action, and see what was being done to protect them. Hopefully, they would be motivated to protect their environment too!

IMG_3828_FinThe next day was Indonesia’s Independence Day, so the whole village attended the flag-raising ceremony and was busied with competitions that would be held after the ceremony. Our turn came up near midday; Celebio started with a puppet show, which attracted children and adults alike, and the weekend was rounded off with an environment-themed quiz for the students. It was great to see how much of our presentations the students remembered!

That very afternoon we headed back to the mainland by boat. The weekend was extremely busy, but it was equally rewarding! We had a great time collaborating with Suara Pulau and Celebio, and we hope we can collaborate again in the future!
